I.S.C. Announce New Format for 2001 World Championship

March 30, 2001

ANAHEIM HILLS, CA - The International Softball Congress has announced that its 55th Annual ISC World Fastpitch Tournament to be held in Eau Claire, Wisconsin August 10-19, 2001 will feature an entirely new playing format.

All previous 54 ISC World Tournaments have been contested using a double-elimination arrangement whereby each team is eliminated from the tournament after two losses. For the last several years, the ISC has limited the field to 48 teams. This format calls for 94 or 95 games depending upon whether or not the loser's bracket winner beats the winner's bracket winner
in the first "final" game.

This year's tournament will be contested using a round robin format with only 40 entries. All 40 teams will be seeded into eight pools of five teams. Each team will play the other four teams in its pool. Upon completion of pool play, the top two teams from each pool will move into a 16-team two lives bracket which will result in a single "final" game for the ISC World
Championship. This will also result in a total of 102 games in the tournament - 80 in pool play and 22 in the two lives bracket. Each team in the tournament will be guaranteed at least four games.
