Canada West ISC Canadian Vice President and Area Commissioner, Ferdi Nelissen, is announcing that the ISC II Qualifier for his Area will be held in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on the weekend of May 30, 31 and June 1. At a meeting Monday January 6th with newly selected Progress for Portage Event Chair, Jim Lehman, the decision was reached to name this Tournament, now entering its fourth year, as the ISC II Qualifier. This is the second year for this partnership as the 2002 tournament was sanctioned as the initial Canada West ISC II Qualifier. The Progress for Portage Committee, which hosted the event last year, and Nelissen both communicated a strong desire to have the Qualifier at Republic of Manitoba Park. This arose from the ISC II Qualifier being highlighted as the feature tournament for the opening of the brand new lighted ball diamond which has been built over the past year on this site. Both Nelissen, who sits on the Committee for the new diamond, and the Progress Group which has donated funds for three years to the project, feel the ISC II is the type of tournament which will provide quality profile to the opening of the new facility. Last year's Qualifier attracted a competitive eight-team field and tournament organizers hope to increase that number with the winner eligible to take a berth to the ISC II Championship in Kimberly, Wisconsin August 10 15, 2003. Teams from the Canada West Area, which includes the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the states of North Dakota and Montana, are eligible if they meet requirements as set out by the ISC. These can found on the ISC web site www.iscfastpitch.com or by contacting Nelissen via the info listed below. Nelissen and Lehman are also extremely excited about the fact that the tournament will be held in conjunction with youth events scheduled for the weekend. This will include a Youth/Development Clinic, which has been endorsed as an ISC Developmental Event. The organizers have already approached and are hoping to have some of the top fastpitch players in the province assist with the clinic scheduled for Friday May 30 at the Republic Park. This clinic will endeavor to promote fastpitch softball to young Male Players but is open to all youth. There are 9-10 diamonds available and the group plans to utilize all for this event. The cost will be announced later in a formal announcement however it will be minimal and all youth who attend the clinic will be able to attend the weekend competitions using their clinic pass as a tournament pass. Over the next couple of months Nelissen and the Progress for Portage organizers will be sending out formal notices with more details regarding the ISC II Qualifier and the Developmental Clinic.
