Winnipeg Wins Title in All-Canada Final

The Winnipeg, Manitoba Mudhens defeated the Harriston, Ontario, Storm Sunday in the championship game of the International Softball Congress Young Men’s Under-23 North American Fast-Pitch Championships at Diamonds of Champions, 5-2.The Mudhens won four straight games to claim in the title.

In the title game, winning pitcher Chad Klassen spaced eight hits and struck out seven. The Mudhens won four despite collecting just five hits off losing pitcher Bill Monkman.

Monkman, Geoff Gunson each had two hits for Harriston. Rob Giesbrecht, named the tourney’s most valuable player, had a hit and RBI for Winnipeg.Harriston eliminated defending champion Junkers Bar & Grill of North Mankato, Minn., earlier Sunday, 4-3, then sidelined Winterset, Iowa, 6-3.

The Mudhens also swept the individual awards.

Klassen was named the most valuable pitcher and Giesbrecht was named the most valuable player.

Giesbrecht, Matt Darling of Winterset, Darren Wydeman of Harriston and B.J. Boom of Sioux Falls Ebert’s Construction were named to the all-tournament outfield.The all-tourney catchers were Joe Zydowsky of Portage, Wis., 51 Classics and Terry Martin of Harriston. Mike Foster of Manitobga was named utility player and Klassen, Monkman of Harriston and Trevor McDonald of the Mudhens were the all-tourney pitchers.

All-tournament infielders included Rich Daneault of the Mudhens, Jason Darling of Winterset, Tony parsons of the Vemon Center, Minn., in-laws, Gunson of Harriston and Joel Jensen and T.J. Hansen of Junkers Bar & Grill.
