Ken Radford of Mt. Morris made two key plays late in an elimination game, helping Greasel Graphics of Frankenmuth win the International Softball Congress North American East Division boys’ 19-and-under fastpitch tournament in
Frankemuth.
Readford, one of three Flint area players on the team, made a diving catch on a lead-off line drive in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve a 2-2 tie against a team from Munger, Mich.
Then, in the top of the eighth, Radford drilled a two-run homer which proved to be the game- winning hit in a 4-3 victory. It was the first fastpitch tournament for Radford, a three-sport varsity player at Mt. Morris High since his freshman year.
"I knew it was gone the moment it hit the bat, " said Radford, who will be a junior this fall. "I’ve hit a baseball that far before, but never a
softball."
That triumph kept Grasel alive and it went on to win the title with two victories over Wroxter, Ontario 8-0 and 4-1. Wroxter had beaten Greasel 3-2 earlier in the event.
Grasel will play Chilliwauk, British Colombia for the ISC North American title Aug. 20-22 in Kimberly, Wis.
Other area players on the team were Todd Moore of Ctio, who scored the fist run of the game in Grasel’s first victory over Wroxter, and Nathan McGinnis of Mt.
Morris.
Tom Stasik, the girls’ softball coach at Mt. Morris, coached the team.
