Thirteen teams will compete for the right to represent the East in the International Softball Congress North American Championship boys 19-and –under tournament this weekend. Frankenmuth’s Heritage Park will host the 3-day event, beginning with the opening game at 11am on Friday, July 10 and ending with the finals at 1pm on
Sunday.
The winner advances to Kimberly, Wisc.-the site of the ISC World Tournament. Frankenmuth’s Tom Stasik, the ISC secretary and Michigan commisioner, is the
tournament director.
Defending world champion, Milverton, Ontario, is back to challenge for its title.
Det Benson , manager of the Munger Agri-Sales team has a strong team that features three USA National Team members. The pitching duties will be handled by Judd Berthiaurne of Roseville, Minn. And Tyron McKinney of Ashland, Ohio. Munger’s own Reid Benson will also return as
catcher-outfielder.
McKinney, a high school senior, is attracting baseball scholarships as well as bowling scholarships. He already has 11,300 games racked up.
Grasel Graphics of Frankenmuth, last year’s fourth-place team, is also back. But Manager Stasik’s squad will have a different look. Chad Stasik, Kyle Bierlein, Pat Murtha, Greg Roseberry and Steve Doerr have eligibility left, but have a prior team tourney commitment in Lodington. Libby Poellet, a pitcher-catcher also on the team, will be traveling to Lodington,
too.
Stasik has been scurrying around to find athletes interested in fastpitch softball. Hagersville, Ohio native Brent Fehrman is back for his third year on the team. Fehrman was Frankenmuth’s leading hitter in the tournament two years ago. Everitt Kettlehut, Jamie Carnes, Chris Cramer and Steve Bouvey will help strengthen the host
team.
Stittsville, the host team for the Canadian Nationals this year, has a strong team and features an 18-year-old shortstop who played for the New Zealand National team last summer.
Other teams in the tourney include Buxton, Napanee, Murillo, Stratford, New Dundee, Glencoe, Wroxeter, Linwood and Elmira, Ontario, Canada.
The Friday games begin at 11 am and will continue until approximately 9 pm and begin Saturday at 8 am and play all day.
