Pan American Games Date Conflicts in 2003 Addressed by ISC |
| The International Softball Congress was recently
informed by Softball Canada of a competition date change for the Pan
American Games in the Dominican Republic in 2003. The original Pan Am
dates were announced as mid July to August 1. However, at a recent
meeting, it was announced the Games competition dates would be changed to
August 1 August 17, 2003. Mr. Greg Harney, Managing Director, US Olympic Committee, confirmed these new dates in a December 19, 2001 e-mail. The ISC World Tournament has always begun the second Friday of August. In 2003 the ISC dates are August 8 16. Obviously, the Pan Am Games and the ISC World Tournament are in direct conflict with each other. While ASA hasn't officially announced their 2003 Men's Major National Tournament dates, the Pan Am competition will possibly conflict with their tournament too. Upon learning of this conflict, the ISC Executive Committee and the 2003 host organization, Kimberly (WI) Recreation Association, began discussions of possible options to avoid the conflict. We discussed starting the ISC a week later but that would have placed it in conflict with the Canadian Senior A National Tournament in Owen Sound scheduled for August 24 - 31. Owen Sound and Kimberly both had the potential of loss of volunteers and hotel availability problems if the dates were changed. The end result of our discussions was unanimous agreement that the ISC World Tournament will be conducted during its traditional dates, August 8 16, 2003. We realize this is going to create some problems for certain players in the US, Canada, Argentina and some other countries. However, taking everything into consideration, it was felt this was the best course of action.
