ISC Retains Current Re-Entry Rule, Rejects ASA Rule Change

Beginning with the 2002 season, the official rules of softball, created by the ASA have a change which allows substitutes to re-enter a game.

The ISC will NOT adopt this rule change and will continue with the former rule allowing only starting players to re-enter. This will affect all ISC play; travel leagues, area qualifying tournaments, World Tournament, ISC II and all Developmental tournaments.

The issue was presented to the ISC Executive Committee, ISC Rules Committee, and ISC Umpire Staff. It was the unanimous feeling of these groups that the change in the rule would add nothing to our sport or our games..

Unfortunately, the rejection of this ASA rule will not appear in the 2002 ISC World Championship Guide where special ISC rules are listed. Therefore, we will have to make certain this information gets to all teams, umpires, tournament administrators and commissioners via this type of release and word of mouth.

The general feeling was this new rule was likely created to benefit the recreational type teams to have more players get more playing time. The ISC felt it would create confusion for teams, umpires, scorers and statisticians without providing any real benefit to the sport.

The ISC adopted rule is as follows:

In all ISC Tournament and Travel League play any of the starting players, including DP and DEFO, may be substituted or replaced and re-entered once, provided players occupy the same batting positions whenever in the lineup. Note: Substitutes may not re-enter.

The easiest way to remember this is we'll be playing the same rule as in 2001.
